What is an RTO?
RTO or Regenerative Thermal Oxidizers are nothing but air pollution control systems engineered to provide the most advanced and efficient ways to destroy volatile organic compounds using the process of oxidation.
Why go for Dürr’s Cat. X RO?
Cat. X RO is an excellent mixture of the regenerative heat exchanger and catalytic oxidation. It consists of benefits from both systems. Its primary purpose is to reduce the level of pollutants present in the exhaust air that has not been heavily contaminated and helps minimize the odor emission. This makes it a vital part of the air pollution control system in India.
How does the Cat. X RO work?
The Cat. X RO air pollution control system is a regenerative thermal oxidizer that consists of a catalyst above the heat exchanger bed. Generally, base metal or precious metal is used as a catalyst material, resulting in a chemical reaction with the incoming volatile compounds (VOCs) or hazardous air pollutants (HAPs). This helps bring the reaction temperature to lower levels, resulting in less heat consumption, which further leads to the reduced usage of the external energy needed to convert the pollutants. The temperature inside the combustion chamber can be reduced from 850 degrees Celsius to just or below 500 degrees Celsius. Once the pollutants have been converted, the clean exhaust air can leave the air pollution control system.
How is Cat.X RO made?
The Cat. X RO has the same design as a conventional Cat. X RO system. However, it has been equipped with an additional catalyst to operate with a lower combustion chamber temperature. This air pollution control system can treat exhaust gases with low pollutant concentrations of just less than 1g/Nm3 without using any kind of additional primary energy sources. This is because of its highly efficient recovery of the heat by the ceramic heat exchanger.
Benefits of using Cat. X RO air pollution control system in India.
Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) found in solvent-laden exhaust air streams during manufacturing are either collected to be used later or destroyed.
When there is little or no scope for recovery value in the solvent or when it is dangerous to dispose of toxic compounds, a destruction technology from Dürr such as thermal or catalytic oxidation may be the best option to use.
The Cat. X RO regenerative catalytic oxidizer (RCOs) has the best of both worlds as it consists of the low operating temperature of the catalytic oxidizer with the recovery characteristics and heat storage of a regenerative thermal oxidizer (RTO). This mixture helps in providing the lowest operational cost VOC oxidation technology available for applications with low VOC concentrations.
Some of the significant benefits of using Cat. X RO –
1) Lower operating cost as compared to the conventional regenerative thermal oxidizers
2) Reduced consumption of natural gas and fan output
3) 5 plus year lifespan of a catalyst
4) Operation becomes mainly flameless, and consumption of NOx is reduced
5) High efficiency in the scenarios where the VOC levels are low
6) Volume increase when converting an RTO to an RCO
7) Low operating costs combined with high levels of efficiency
